Earlier today, my friend Jay at Dog Habitat passed along the following email from Calla Wright, who works for the Farm Sanctuary. The subject of his email: Somewhere in Harlem there’s a restaurant missing a chicken.
We have a situation that I was wondering if any of you could help me out with. There is a broiler chicken up in Harlem that someone has caught, but they do not want to hold onto the bird. We cannot arrange for immediate transport up to Watkins Glen, where the chicken will eventually go to live out the rest of their life. In the meantime, we’re looking for someone who can pick up the chicken in Harlem and keep them at your place for a few days. If you’re able to do so, or you know someone else who is able to do so, or you think you MIGHT be able to do so but need more information, PLEASE write back to me asap and I’ll put you in touch with our shelter staff upstate. Basically, you just need a box or cat carrier to bring the bird back to your place, and then you need to feed them seeds and water over the next few days until we can arrange transport. From the photo sent to the farm, we cannot tell if the chicken is a rooster or a hen. (Not sure that matters to anyone on this list, but just in case.) Everyone please, try to think of someone who could help out. Thanks.

I emailed Calla. She told me a foster home had already been located. One brave chicken escaping the fryer and shacking up in Manhattan… I smell a movie deal!
