When you’re trying to get a dog to behave the way you’d like it to, so much is contingent on figuring out what is most rewarding to the dog, and then delivering that reward with timing that’s precise enough so that you’re reinforcing exactly the behaviors that you want. Today’s man of honor, BF Skinner, had expert timing; by strategically giving or withholding rewards, he was able to able to teach cats to play the piano and pigeons to play ping pong.
